Oilers Sign Bouchard to Two-Year Contract
Defenseman's Deal Could Drive Extension
Edmonton, AB. - August 02, 2023
The Edmonton Oilers have signed restricted free agent defenseman Evan Bouchard to a two-year, $7.8 million contract, the team announced Tuesday.
The deal carries an average annual value of $3.9 million and will keep Bouchard in Edmonton through the 2024-25 season. He was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1, 2023.
Bouchard, 23, is a rising star on the Oilers' blue line. He had a breakout season in 2021-22, scoring 12 goals and adding 25 assists in 82 games. He also led all NHL defensemen in points per game (0.45) among players who played at least 70 games.
The Oilers are hoping that Bouchard can continue to develop and become a top-pairing defenseman. He is a skilled puck-mover who can quarterback the team's power play. He also has a good shot and is not afraid to use it.
Bouchard's signing is the latest in a series of moves by the Oilers to improve their defense. They have also signed veteran defenseman Brett Kulak and traded for young defenseman Philip Broberg in recent months.
The Oilers are hoping that their new-look defense can help them make a deep playoff run in 2023-24. They have not won a playoff series since 2017.
